The story of Three Heads Brewing began in the early 2000s in a Brighton neighborhood, fueled by beers, music, sports, and spirited foosball games. The journey kicked off with Dan Nothnagle, who had spent over 20 years exploring great beers from around the world. Dan began sharing his collection with friends Todd Dirrigl, Brian Johnson, and Geoff Dale. The group found themselves drawn to the bold flavors of West Coast brews, sparking the realization that Rochester lacked similar beers of distinction. This led to the idea of starting their own brewery.
Determined to make high-quality beer, the group embarked on a homebrewing journey in Todd’s basement. Within months, they were crafting impressive homebrews and decided to test their skills in local competitions. Their efforts paid off with 3 gold medals and a bronze on their first try, followed by continued success, including a “Best of Show” award at Buffalo’s Amber Waves of Grain competition, beating over 420 entries.
With this momentum, they realized it was time to take the next step. Instead of building a brewery from scratch, they partnered with CB Craft Brewers in Honeoye Falls, known for producing flawless ales. In 2010, Three Heads Brewing Inc. was officially born, and by 2016, they moved into their own state-of-the-art brewery at 186 Atlantic Ave, in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts.
